Unforgettable Day! (Hirere Falls)

by Jacques
(Victoria, Australia)

Hirere Falls

Hirere Falls

It was a beautiful sunny day when a friend and I recently walked along the Clinton River, Day2 Milford Sound track NZ, on the way to Mintaro Hut.

We had very early on noticed the Hirere Falls jetting out like a fire hose from the mountain. After passing the guided walkers' stop-off at Hirere Hut, we had lunch at the Clinton River, off the main track.

After a nice swim, we found a dry river bed in the direction of Hirere Falls and followed that, coming out at the base of the Falls. What a surprise! We were able to climb up to where the second to last section of the waterfall landed in a pool, in which we could swim.

We had a beautiful view of the Pompolona icefields, the Dead Lake and the rest of the valley. It was an absolute unforgettable experience.

Brings Back Memories
by: World of Waterfalls

Your posting really brought us back to our Milford Track Experience several years ago. I remembered how our 2nd day started with lightly overcast skies after a beautiful day the day before (though we didn't spend as much time at Hirere Falls as you have.

Day 2 turned out to be the last of the fair weather on our trek as it started pouring that afternoon. And it got worse when we went over MacKinnon Pass and out to Sandfly Point on the last day. But Milford Sound on the day after end of the trek was beautiful as the storm cleared.

Oh yeah, Sutherland Falls was mesmerizing!

In any case, we still vividly remember the experience, and your post just brought back those flood of great memories. Thanks for sharing!
