Waterfall at Lake Waikaremoana (Te Urewera National Park, North Island)

Waterfall at Lake Waikaremoana

Waterfall at Lake Waikaremoana

Lake Waikaremoana or ''sea of rippling water'' in Maori is off the beaten track for most travelers to New Zealand.

This waterfall is only accessible via boat or during a 53km hike round the lake. On the weekend I made the hike the lake was completely shrouded in mist, I think it was a worthwhile trip though as I like this photo of the waterfall taken on a tripod at about a one second exposure with a cheap point and shoot digital camera.

Korokoro Falls
by: World of Waterfalls

If memory serves me correctly, I believe this waterfall is the Korokoro Falls on the western shore of Lake Waikaremoana.

When I was planning our trip to New Zealand for our book project, this was on the list of waterfalls to see.

However, I thought we had to do the 53km Lake Waikaremoana Track to see it, and we didn't have the time to do it. We only managed to see Bridal Veil Falls, Momahaki Falls and Te Tangi-o-Hinerau, and Papakorito Falls.

Then, a kind ranger from the Department of Conservation pointed out to me that you could hire a boat ride to get there and back (which you were able to do).

Of course this happened during the course of researching and fact-checking the NZ Book Project (after our very last trip there) so we were never able to do it.

Thanks for sharing your photo and experience. I really need to get back there!
