Silver Cord Cascade

Silver Cord Cascade

Silver Cord Cascade is a tall and slender cascade tumbling some 1000ft on the south rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. This cascade looks like it goes dry deep into the summer, but if you're in the area in spring or early summer, it's well worth checking out.

In order to view the cascade, we had to do a hike. Fortunately, it wasn't a long hike though it could easily be extended to a long one as it's part of the Seven-Mile Hole Hike, which goes all the way to the floor of the canyon in a rugged and tiring hike.

From the trailhead (see directions below), we hiked a little over a mile to get to a part where we can see and photograph the tall and slender cascade. There isn't an official vantage point (i.e. there's no signs or obvious part of the trail to stop and take a look). But if you take your time looking around for where the trail provides open views between the trees, you'll get views like what's photographed at the top of this page. Now since the viewpoint is neither obvious nor signposted, I do have to caution you to be careful not to get too far off the trail or too close to the rim.

Directions: The trailhead is on the Inspiration Point Drive, whose turnoff is a little over a half-mile from Canyon Village on the one-way North Rim Drive. The trailhead and parking area is near the Glacial Boulder, which is less than a half-mile north of Inspiration Point (which itself is at the end of the Inspiration Point Drive).
