Upper Falls tends to be overshadowed by the Lower Falls further downstream, but this impressive 110ft waterfall holds its own in terms of scenery and magnitude.
In fact, I'd bet you could have whole parks devoted to a waterfall like this if it weren't for Lower Falls being so close to this one in a National Park that has so many things going for it besides these waterfalls.
Julie and I managed to see this waterfall from a couple of spots. And to our knowledge, I don't think you can get closer to the falls than the obvious lookouts and trails sanctioned by the Park Service.
Upper Falls from Uncle Tom's Lookout: From the lookout here and the trail along the rim leading west of here (in the direction of Chittenden Bridge), you get the classic view of this waterfall with the Chittenden Bridge further upstream of it providing that nice sense of scale as well as an extra subject in your photo to add intrigue to it.
The car park for this overlook (as well as the Uncle Tom's Trail itself) is about 0.6 miles along the South Rim Drive from the Grand Loop Road just south of the Canyon Junction.
Brink of the Upper Falls: There's a short trail leading from a designated car park to the edge of this waterfall. While the brink of the Lower Falls was closed, we at least got a chance to get a sense of the power of the waterfall being next to this guy.
The car park for this spot at the end of a turnoff 1.7 miles south of the Canyon Junction (near Canyon Village) along the Grand Loop Road.
