About Us

About The World Of Waterfalls

WHO ARE WE?

My name is Johnny, and I’m the author, webmaster, and owner of the World of Waterfalls. My wife’s name is Julie.

Julie and I started this adventure as a duo out of the Greater Los Angeles area, but now we’re a trio thanks to our daughter Tahia who we’ve taken on our travels with us.

A BRIEF STORY BEHIND THE WORLD OF WATERFALLS

Back in 2000, I attended graduate school and worked full time. Julie also worked full time.

So as we looked for ways to balance our lives, Julie had this idea about doing local hikes to waterfalls on the weekends in the Southern California area.

After all, we loved nature, and this just seemed like one of those ideas that made a lot of sense to us.

Moreover, we quickly learned that just engaging in this activity recharged us.

Soon local trips grew to road trips further abroad.  Then, road trips grew to overseas trips.

Before we knew it, we pursued waterfalls around the world, and it had become a lifelong adventure.

When we shared the love with friends and family, we also learned that we could spend quality time with each other while waterfalling (i.e. the activity of chasing waterfalls in real life).

These days, we look for any excuse to seek out waterfalls as they tend to coincide with the most meaningful moments of our lives.

In addition to waterfalls, Julie had a passion for travel. She always wanted to go places.

So in our early days of being together, she managed to get me over my fear of flying to explore places like Cancun, Maui, and Tahiti.

When we realized the benefits of waterfalls, we wanted to combine these passions.

Through travel, we got to experience diversity in the people, the food, the environments, the culture, and the languages.

With waterfalling, we also got to experience the natural world in foreign lands.

As a result, given this happy marriage of travel and waterfalls, we found ourselves learning a lot about the world around us as well as a lot about ourselves.

In fact, many waterfalls forced us to go well off the beaten tourist paths.

This, in turn, allowed us to stumble upon some relatively hidden gems (both waterfalling- and non-waterfalling-related) that engaged us even more with the locals while allowing us to see the most beautiful places on earth.

WHY SHARE OUR WORLD WATERFALLING EXPERIENCES?

So far, we’ve engaged in waterfalling for at least 20 years.

For an activity to last this long, there must be something about it that resonated with who we are.

Indeed, we’ve found an activity that the whole family can do that doesn’t get old and that we can maintain for the rest of our lives.

We can even spread the love and share with friends as well as other family members.

Isn’t that what life is about? Love? Variety? Sharing? Camaraderie? Purpose?

If waterfalls have had this kind of an affect on us, we have to believe that it ought to have a similar effect on other people, too!

So that’s why we have created this website. After all, it allows us to share our experiences and help people get the same feels as what we’ve been getting.

Besides, if more people have positive experiences with waterfalling, then the more they’re likely to care about their world as well as those of other people in their lives.

Ultimately, that leads to more happy people, which in turn makes the world a better place.

And who wouldn’t want that?

The way I see it, waterfall travel is one of the few activities where everyone seems to win.

Furthermore, it has the potential to bring the people together in a positive and meaningful way!

So why not help people realize this?

Feel free to browse through this website, take a virtual tour of the most beautiful places on earth through waterfalls, and be inspired to partake in your own journey.

We’re here to spread the love, and we hope that you will also become waterfallers looking to make the world a happier and more natural place.

Sincerely,

Johnny Cheng
