Northern Territory and Western Australia Itinerary (22 Days)

This itinerary covers our very first trip to Australia, which focused on two of the country's largest states - the Northern Territory (NT) and Western Australia (WA). I guess you could call this the Stereotypical Outback Trip because we did indeed visit some iconic sights like Uluru (formerly Ayer's Rock), the Aboriginal lands of the Top End, the seemingly endless deserts in WA like the Pilbara, and more. This was also the trip where I managed to damage the rental car when a kangaroo hopped out in front of me as we were driving from Cervantes to Perth. I guess that was a hard lesson in avoiding driving between dusk and dawn, or at least respect the hazards even though some of the roads in the Outback didn't have speed limits! From a pop culture standpoint, the long drives had also exposed me to Triple J Radio, which was essentially like what LA Alternative Station KROQ used to be in the early 90s except it was national without much censoring and without commercials plus they had better shows like Science Talkback with Dr Karl and the Hack Current Affairs Program. Indeed, once I knew I could stream Triple J at home, there was no going back to anything else on commercial radio.

Anyways, this trip spanned a period of three weeks, and it did involve quite a bit of flying since we were covering a lot of remote real estate. That said, we were pretty much on our own when we did a very long drive from Broome all the way to Margaret River, Albany, and Hyden before ending the trip in Perth. This trip contained so much diversity and it was such an enjoyable one (except for the kangaroo incident) that we wound up going back to Australia some 6 months later!
