Kapena Falls...with a bonus Alapena Falls

(Alliance NE, formerly Ewa Beach, HI)

We found Alapena Falls first.

Tons of mosquitos, not a deep enough pool to
swim, lots of litter from beer bottles to other trash around the shore. Not a spectacular falls.

Then my friends tried to take a shortcut back to the car and found Kapena Falls. Much prettier, still lots of mosquitos, less trash, deeper pool for swimming.

WoW should add Alapena falls to the list, just because it exists, and is about a 2 min. walk from Kapena Falls.

That was the 2nd time I went. I went a 3rd time and found a fun way up to Kapena from Alapena.

Climb down to Alapena from the Pali Hwy, and then climb up and over the falls to the far side of them. then hike upstream to Kapena Falls.

To get back to your car, just cross the stream again and climb back up!

Kapena Falls 1976
by: Jeannette

My memories of Kapena Falls was that we would ditch school and ride the bus to where the cemeteries were and walk around the highway, hike down a bit to the falls.

We moved to California soon after since my brother & I were ditching too much school and our fondest memories besides hanging out at Waikiki and Alamoana beach was Kapena Falls.

Since I was only 11 years old, I wasn't sure exactly where this place was and never saw it on tourism brochures and happy to see this article on the internet.

It was fun to go swimming there and can only imagine it now being a party place and full of party waste. Now I can show my kids where me and my brother would hang out at.

I couldn't help but wonder if that tiny waterfall just downstream from Kapena Falls was indeed Alapena Falls.

Below is a photo of that other waterfall (not sure if it's Alapena Falls or not).
