Bear Creek Falls

submitted by Philipp Merillat on July 27, 2024

The World of Waterfalls has been to this waterfall, which you can read about here.
Bear Creek Falls viewing platform for Bear Creek Falls with Ralston Creek Cascades to the west

Bear Creek Falls is the last waterfall you will see before passing through the tunnel on the Million Dollar Highway driving from SIlverton to Ouray.

The highway and bridge pass over the falls as shown in the photo as viewed from the viewing platform with parking area and pulloff just beyond the falls.

The viewing platform extends out from the cliff edge on the Uncompahgre Gorge and there is a descriptive placard about the falls and the Million Dollar Highway at this viewing area.

The view to the east from the viewing platform is of Bear Creek Falls, and the view to the west from the platform is of the long series of cascades on Ralston Creek.

Both Ralston Creek and Bear Creek have their confluences with the Uncompahgre River here, but on opposite sides of the river.

Continuing north on the Million Dollar Highway and after passing through the tunnel before reaching a viewpoint above Ouray the next waterfall you will see on this route is Cascade Falls.

There is also a pulloff at this point describing the “Switzerland of America”.

Before descending into the town of Ouray, there is a turn for Box Canyon Falls and Park, worth a visit and the small fee.
