These series of cascades have their origin on the western slopes of Cunningham Gulch between King Solomon Mountain and Little Giant Peak, both of which are thirteeners (peaks over thirteen thousand feet).
Taking the route along the east side of Cunningham Creek past the turnoff to Stony Pass south of Howardsville, you can get a view of these cascades from the roadway and about a dozen or so of such cascades before reaching the trailhead at Highland Mary Lakes trailhead.
Several of these cascades may be flowing year round. These cascades are just downstream from the ones flowing down from Green Mountain and Little Giant Peak on the east and west sides of the creek, respectively, just further upstream at the BLM camping sites area.
Further upstream from the BLM camping sites area you can get a good view of the cascades on Royal Tiger Creek. After crossing Cunningham Creek proceeding further upstream, the roadway begins a steeper ascent to Highland Mary Lakes trailhead. A four wheel drive vehicle may be recommended at this point.
Before reaching the parking area at the Highland Mary Lakes trailhead, you can get a good view of Mountaineer Creek Falls on Mountaineer Creek.
Best time to view the waterfalls and wildflowers may be in mid June. The BLM campsites area is at 10,400′ elevation. There are several hiking trails and waterfall views from this area that makes it a good camping spot, including old mining claims and the Continental Divide Trail.
