We hiked to the Cedar Creek Falls on Sunday, July 18th, 2010. This was a VERY Difficult hike!!! We are probably not coming back. We hiked from the Ramona, Thornbush, side and it is very steep going down.
As we made our way to the first patch of shade we found a couple there, who had come down from the Ramona side, with a large Rottweiler dog that was over heated and going into seizures. We were frightened at how bad the dog looked, bloody paws, vomiting blood and panting wildly, I thought it was going to die. The couple had not even made it to the falls yet.
We really were unprepared ourselves. We only brought about 1/2 gallon of water for each person and it was almost gone by the time we got to the falls. Once at the falls we ran into about 150 other people, the place was really crowded and we barely could even get in the water. The hike out was miserable!!! We tried to wait ’til past 6pm but it was still hot and we didn’t have much water. We made it back to our vehicle after about 1.5 hours of hiking straight up the hill. We DO NOT Recommend this hike to ANYONE!!! Beware of this hike, it is very deceiving. It’s mostly down hill to get there, but it’s all UPHILL going back.
We read that the previous day there was a family who had to be rescued and one of their dogs actually died on the the same trail we hiked on. Kinda eerie.
Do your research, bring at least 1 gallon of water per person and food too.
