Mountaineer Creek Falls Mountaineer Creek Falls and road Mountaineer Creek Falls in 3D

Mountaineer Creek Falls on Mountaineer Creek is the last waterfall to see on the road up to Highland Mary trailhead.

For the last mile of this road up from the BLM campsites along Cunningham Creek you would likely need a four wheel drive vehicle as the roadway becomes very steep.

Or you could choose to walk it.

The trailhead to Highland Mary Lakes is to the east of the waterfall less than a quarter mile on the other side of Cunningham Creek.

You can drive right up to near the base of the waterfall with a four wheel drive vehicle on the mining road that switchbacks on up past the waterfall but the better viewing point is from a distance as shown in the photos.

To reach the falls, take the road east from Silverton along the Animas River then head south at Howardsville on up Cunningham Gulch past the BLM camping sites.

You will see the falls when you reach parking areas near the Highland Mary Lakes trailhead before crossing Cunningham Creek which is not necessary (there is no bridge crossing the creek).

You can park at a distance in view of the falls without continuing up to the falls on the very steep mining road past the falls.

As the road becomes steeper on up to the falls and beyond you may have difficulty finding any parking areas or turnaround points.

The better viewing point is where you find parking areas below the falls closeby the prominent rock formation as shown in the 3D photo.
