Falls Creek Falls
An unusual waterfall in the Santa Rosa Range, within the Great Basin of Nevada. The Santa Rosas, in the far northern part of the state next to southeastern Oregon, are another of those little-known Nevada ranges with peaks near 10,000 feet and perennial streams. Most of the southern part of the range is included in […]
Los Alamos
J. Robert Oppenheimer, the high-powered physicist who became the scientific director of the Manhattan Project, loved New Mexico and had even bought a ranch there. When he was looking for a remote place where secrecy could be maintained more easily, a New Mexico location seemed ideal. Indeed, Los Alamos is located on the former site […]
Margaret Falls
Located near Salmon Arm. Margaret Falls is quite impressive and it’s well worth the detour off of the highway. The gorge in the area is stunning and the trail is easy. 0 CommentsOnly logged in users can post a comment (login at topright corner of your screen) Please login or sign up to comment
Natural Bridge, 1967 (with a footbridge!)
Some more ancient history that may be of interest. When we were at Natural Bridge Falls in 1967, as part of a family trip, there was an observation footbridge over the falls proper! Obviously, from your photos, it’s no longer there. I don’t know when or why it was removed. Maybe it was decided it […]
Yosemite Falls from unusual perspectives
I know you have lots of Yosemite Falls pix, so I realize more may be superfluous! I thought these might be unusual enough to have some interest, though. (1) Yosemite Falls completely dry in October, 2001. I’m told there is a big wall climb that can only be done when the falls are dry. (2) […]
Snoqualmie Falls, flood of November 1985
Thought you might like these pix of Snoqualmie Falls in the flood of November, 1985. The floodplain downstream was close to completely inundated–I’ve added a couple of pix of it as well, located somewhere between Duvall and Carnation. Sorry for the poor quality scans of decades-old slides, but I thought there might be some historical […]
May 2021 Update
We hiked Piney Creek Falls this month and found a way to some fantastic views at the top of the falls. If you go over the suspension bridge and turn right, there’s an unmarked but discernible trail that travels along Piney Creek. After about a tenth of a mile, it appears to dead end with […]
Above Multnomah Falls
If you continue on the trail above the falls you _really_ lose the crowds–as well as the pavement. 😉 You pass another couple of waterfalls on Multnomah Creek: first Weisendanger, and then Ecola. After a bit more than half a mile from the top at Multnomah a branch trail heads west, which you can take […]
Poudre Falls
A tumultuous, high-volume set of cascades along Colorado State Route 14 on the Cache la Poudre (“cash la pooder” locally, “pooder” for short) River. In fact, it’s remarkable they escaped being tapped for hydropower in the early 20th century, particularly with all the waterworks elsewhere in the Colorado Rockies. If traveling westbound, Poudre Falls are […]
Bedrock
Bedrock’s other claim to fame is that the old general store was featured in _Thelma and Louise_. I was taking pictures when a couple of local women stopped their pickup and regaled me about Bedrock’s moment of cinematic glory! And yes, August in high Colorado is definitely monsoon season. 0 CommentsOnly logged in users can […]
Webber Falls 5/2/2021
Thanks for the info on Webber Falls! We’d been along Co. Rd 07/Jackson Meadows Rd. any number of times, heading for access points to the Pacific Crest Trail farther west, and had no idea this waterfall was even there. The USGS 7.5′ quad shows a “falls” on the Little Truckee, but it’s unnamed, and there’s […]
An unnamed trickle on the dusty road to Shillong
This is just a trickle, but it is one of many tiny waterfalls that have been special to me as a botanist. I study wild taros (Colocasia) that grow in wet places. In 1987 I first began seeing wild taros on waterfalls in Queensland when I was doing fieldwork for my PhD. Since then I’ve […]
Black Bear Pass trail
Just a side note: the Black Bear Pass switchbacks, shown on your map above, are part of one of the most notorious extreme Jeep trails in the Colorado high country! Check out YouTube for some hair-raising videos. 3 CommentsOnly logged in users can post a comment (login at topright corner of your screen) Please login […]
Nevada gas prices
Yes, western Nevada gets California refinery formulations, so gas is expensive. And Washoe County (Reno metropolitan area) has higher gas taxes! Renoites make a point of filling in Carson City or Douglas County if they’re down there. And, of course, next time you’re thru Reno you can check out Hunter Creek Falls! 2 CommentsOnly logged […]
Lundy Canyon to 20 Lakes Basin
A number of years back we looked at access into Lundy Canyon down the trail from 20 Lakes Basin, and also blanched! I’ve attached a view near the top of the switchbacks, as well as a photo of the top of the falls. At least there’s no snow left, in August, but the creek flow […]
Thanks for posting this!
Hadn’t heard of this, and I’ve been to Twin Falls more than once! I’ll have to check it out next time I’m there. 1 CommentOnly logged in users can post a comment (login at topright corner of your screen) Please login or sign up to comment
Shoshone Falls May 2019
It was flowing well in mid-May ’19 when I was there (after picking up the new dog at the Twin Falls shelter!) Alas, it was a gray day and the lighting wasn’t good. The Bonneville flood, which scoured the Snake River Canyon about 18K years ago, wasn’t exactly analogous to the Spokane/Missoula floods that created […]
Hunter Creek Falls
Improbably situated in a wilderness area just west of Reno, Nevada, Hunter Creek Falls and the Hunter Creek Trail are popular with both locals and visitors alike. From the trailhead, on the edge of a residential area, the trail follows Hunter Creek, at first along an old Jeep road. It enters the wilderness area around […]
US-93
If you had to make time, you made the right decision to take NV 318 up to US 6. It saves a half-hour or so off the time to Ely compared to old US 93–but that’s also why all the big rigs go that way, and have done so ever since NV 318 was paved […]
