In March 2004 we were going from Wanaka towards Haast and stopped to visit the Blue Pools which were more of a muddy green at that time of the year. I was impressed by the number of small cairns built by previous visitors on a shingle bank in the river bed. As we climbed the track back up to the highway it started to snow, but luckily it did not continue.
We passed through heavy rain showers, but we did manage photo stops at The Gates of Haast and Thunder Creek in light rain. As we continued northwards we encountered heavy (West Coast variety) rain.
I distinctly remember seeing one waterfall high above the valley floor on the true left side of the valley. The fall must have been striking a rock. The water was rebounding at an angle to form an arch. The effect was quite striking. Unfortunately there rain was too heavy for me to risk my brand new camera and there was no visible convenient place to stop.
Going from memory, the waterfall was in a similar position to Johnny’s unnamed fall above. Has anyone else seen or have knowledge of this fall?
