Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

The Pac Hau Waterfall (Thác Pác Hảu) was a roadside attraction that acted as a welcome stop given the slow and persistently winding roads that snarl through the mountains of Northern Vietnam.

Indeed, this was a welcome place to stretch the legs, and give them a bit of exercise while getting a photo op to boot.

Once we parked the car at an apparent former site of a cafe near the headwaters of the Na Hang Reservoir (see directions below), we were pretty much by the bridge fronting the Pac Hau Waterfall.

First, I pursued a somewhat overgrown path to the right (southwest) side of the bridge that clung to a ledge leading to a somewhat hidden corner with a side view of part of the waterfall’s several segments.

From this “hidden corner”, I saw some railings, a rather large dripping stalactite, and even some remnants of someone doing an impromptu camp or just a chillout session.

Given all the dampness and spray in the air, this alcove was refreshingly cool compared to the rest of the area away from this corner.

There was also a short, steep scrambling path that went closer to the stream, where it was possible to wade in some of the small pools and stream segments within the Pac Hau Waterfall itself.

Back on the road, we then walked over to the bridge that fronted the waterfall where we could get frontal views of its many segments and tiers (plus some spray from punctured or broken diversion pipes).

Given the size of the waterfall and how close the bridge got us to it, we had a hard time trying to capture the whole thing in a single photo.

Anyways, we didn’t spend too much time on this bridge because there were no pedestrian shoulders nor easements (though Vietnamese drivers are pretty conscientious about avoiding pedestrians even without slowing down).

So aside from checking out the falls as well as part of the Na Hang Reservoir along with the outflow of Thac Pac Hau’s stream on the opposite side of the bridge, we were pretty much back in the car after 20 minutes.

Authorities

The Pac Hau Waterfall resides in the Sơn Phú Commune within the Nà Hang District of the Tuyen Quang Province, Vietnam. It may be administered by the Na Hang District Government. I didn’t find an authoritative government website for this local government agency (doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist), but I can’t recommend a website to inquire about current conditions.
