Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

The Sesoko Beach Waterfall is an informal name that I’m giving to this small waterfall that I just so happened to have stumbled upon while exploring Sesoko Beach.

I actually can’t tell if this is a man-modified waterfall or an artificially-created one because it’s situated beneath the outer boundary of the Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort (where we happened to be staying at the time of this visit).

Thus, it could very well be runoff from the resort, which would render this waterfall to be non-natural.

Nevertheless, it certainly did seem to have some interesting natural formations around it including its drainage.

As a result, it’s this ambiguous aspect of whether the runoff is natural and enhanced by the outflow of the Hilton resort, or if it’s entirely man-made altogether, or if it just happens to be natural altogether.

Indeed, flanking this diminutive waterfall (which I’m guessing is no more than 5m) were some sea caves, which I’d imagine might be under water at times of high tide or during storms.

As for how to witness this waterfall, we merely walked about 200m through the pool and garden area of the Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort towards the Sisuco Grill.

From there, we encountered a public road sloping downwards to the northern end of Sesoko Beach, and it’s this stretch of the beach that most people seemed to be content to chill out at.

However, I did some further exploration to the north in the direction of some interesting rock formations, which wound up including sea caves.

And that’s when I happened to stumble upon the Sesoko Beach Waterfall after about another 200m from entering the Sesoko Beach.

This was about 400m from the exit near the All Day Dining Hall in the Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort (and it’s about the same distance from the public car park for Sesoko Beach).

Overall, I spent about 50 very leisurely minutes for this excursion though one can very easily linger longer at the beach (waterfall notwithstanding).

The Sesoko Beach Waterfall resides in Sesoko Island near the town of Motobu on Okinawa Island in the Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. It may be administered by the Motobu Town Government. The Sesoko Beach Waterfall is on Sesoko Beach, which itself is on Sesoko-jima and is associated with the town of Motobu.

Since we merely walked from where we were staying at the Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort to this waterfall, I’ll describe how we drove here from Toyota Rent-a-car near the Naha Airport.

From Naha Airport, we drove the 331 towards the 58, and then we stayed on the 58 along the eventual coastal route (not the E58, which is a toll expressway that’s more inland along the eastern side of Okinawa Island) for about 57km.

Despite the distance, this stretch actually took us closer to 90 minutes because of the many traffic lights and the slow speed limits throughout this route (think 50km/h to 60km/h).

Eventually at about 2.5km after the E58 merged with this route, we then kept left onto the Route 71 where the route split with the Route 58 (right).

We then continued along the 71’s coastal route, which eventually joined up with the 58 again just at the south end of Nago City.

Then, we continued to follow the 71/58 for about 10km before eventually keeping left for the Route 449 (signs now pointing towards the Okinawa Expo Park/Churaumi Aquarium/Motobu).

Next, we followed the 449 for another 11km before turning left at the traffic light onto the Sesoko Bridge to go onto Sesoko Island.

At this point, we were on the 172 Road and followed this for about 2km before turning right then keeping left to follow the road towards the Hilton.

After about 1km, we then turned left at a three-way intersection, where once we were on this road, the public car park for Sesoko Beach was on the left, while the entrance to the car park and reception for the Hilton was on the right.

Hilton_Sesoko_093_jx_11272024 - It was about the same walking distance from the Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort's All Day Dining Hall to Sesoko Beach as it was from the public car park (if you're not a guest at the resort)

Overall, this drive would take around 2-2.5 hours (though it could be shorter or longer depending on the traffic in the greater Naha area, and it depends on if you choose to take the E58 motorway instead of the local route described above).

For some geographical context, Motobu was about 11km (under 30 minutes drive) southwest of Nakijin, about 14km northwest of Nago, about 65km (over an hour drive) northeast of Chatan, and 84km (over 90 minutes drive) northeast of Naha.
