Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

The Suoi Mo Waterfall (Thác Suối Mơ) or Gieo Waterfall (Thác Gieo) was basically a swimming hole waterfall situated about 35km to the southwest of Da Nang or 39km to the west of Hoi An.

This particular waterfall often gets confused with another swimming hole waterfall also called Suoi Mo (Dream) Waterfall in Ba Na Hills (which is even closer to Da Nang City).

I think it’s for that reason that the Suoi Mo Waterfall we’re talking about here may see fewer visitors than that of the one closer to Ba Na Hills.

During our late April 2025 visit, we shared this waterfall with primarily Vietnamese people who came here by motorbike and already knew about this place.

The one notable exception was a mixed-race couple where the guy was from the UK and spoke fluent Vietnamese (having lived in Vietnam going on 6 years).

Nevertheless, this place certainly had a more local vibe about it, which contrasted a lot with the more touristy vibes we would get with other attractions in and around Da Nang and Hoi An.

As you can see from the featured photo above, our Dry Season visit left a lot to be desired in terms of its waterflow and appearance.

In addition to the size of its drainage, I suspect some of that could be due to some diversion efforts that were apparently taking place just upstream of the brink of the waterfall itself.

Our visit pretty much involved paying a local landowner 25k VND per person (which actually bothered our local Da Nang guide because he says you typically don’t have to pay to visit).

Then, we followed a trail with arrows painted on rocks to help lead the way, especially at a stream crossing that might get your feet wet (it wasn’t trivial to stay dry going across it during our visit).

Once we were past the crossing, the trail then led us to a jumble of boulders fringing the large and seemingly deep plunge pool at the base of the Thac Gieo Waterfall or Thac Suoi Moi Waterfall.

Overall, we wound up walking a little under 300m in each direction, and we spent about 40 minutes away from the car.

Authorities

Although the Suoi Mo or Gieo Waterfall resides close to both Da Nang and Hoi An, it actually resides in the An Dinh Village within the Dai Dong Commune of the Dai Loc District in the Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. It may be administered by the local authorities of Dai Loc. To inquire about current conditions, you may want to try the Quang Nam Tourism Authority website.
