About Cascade du Hohwald
Cascade de Hohwald (also called Cascade de l’Andlau) was a refreshing and pretty easy waterfall to visit in the Vosges Mountains.
The waterfall was where l’Andlau Stream dropped over a reported 15m though it did have cascades beneath its main section even running past a viewing platform.

During my late June 2025 visit, the waterfall had a light flow so I suspect that it might be seasonal (i.e. it might go dry or trickle later into the Summer), especially considering I wasn’t that far removed from peak snowmelt period.
Nevertheless, I noticed quite a few people on the trail when I was returning from my morning visit on the weekend so it was certainly more popular than I expected.
It might have to do with them seeking some relief from a heat wave that was hitting much of Southern Europe (think mid-30C) at the time.
As for the hike itself, it was a 400m walk from the nearest trailhead (see directions below) gaining a modest 50-60m in elevation over that span, and it was officially said to take 10 minutes each way (I wound up taking 30 minutes).

Towards the end of this stretch, there was the aforementioned viewing platform for perhaps the most satisfying views of the Cascade du Hohwald, but the trail kept going beyond the platform.
Indeed, I could get even closer to the base of the waterfall by a switchback in the trail where I saw a companion cascade somewhat hidden from the viewing platform’s vantage point.
Exploring even further, the switchbacking trail ultimately went to the top of the waterfall where more trails continued further up both l’Andlau and up the mountain in general, but this was my turnaround point.
Going back down, I did see some moderately sketchy use-trails and scrambling paths leading to the profile of the waterfall for more unusual perspectives, but I definitely appreciated my hiking boots in such optional pursuits.

Overall, this was a nice, naturesque contrast to the cities and castles (seemed like Alsace had lots of them facing east towards Germany) between Strasbourg and Colmar.
