Waterfall Safety and Common Sense

Powerscourt Waterfall is a privately owned waterfall in the Wicklow Mountains residing in the Powerscourt Estate (though they’re on disjoint plots of land and thus don’t share the same entrance).

The Powerscourt Estate is a 47 acre plot of land containing landscaped gardens surrounding a 13th-century castle-turned-house that kind of reminded me of the Versailles Palace.

As for accessing the waterfall, we paid 7 euros per adult or 18 euros for the family (same price for a family of 3 though I think the savings are for additional kids).

Anyways, this waterfall is said to be one of the tallest waterfalls in Ireland (though some claim this one is the tallest), where the Dargle River drops some 121m (397ft) on its way to the Irish Sea.

Visiting Powerscourt Waterfall was actually quite straightforward as it was a mere 300m paved jaunt to get from the car park and playground (see directions below) to the waterfall’s base.

Further amplifying the family-friendly feel of this place, picnic tables and wide grassy areas flanked the path to the falls.

From the paved approach, the waterfall definitely looked regal as its tumbling waters towered over the open area at its base.

Up close where the pavement ended, there were large boulders strewn about the rather hidden plunge pool of the waterfall making the plunge pool not that trivial to access.

The forced perspective of seeing this waterfall from up close made it appear shorter than it really was when we approached it so pictures don’t do it justice from there.

In any case, this was a pretty short visit so I actually tried to find other ways to view the Powerscourt Waterfall.

One of the ways looked like it was across the Dargle River, but the viewing area there (including a lookout tower) was closed during our early July 2024 visit due to construction work.

Apparently, they were trying to build some chalets or lodges perhaps to allow paying guests to stay in this area.

That side looked to yield more direct and differently-angled views of the Powerscourt Waterfall, but I really can’t say more about it since it wasn’t accessible on our visit.
