Hoysteinfossen (Høysteinfossen; “HUHY-styen-foss-un”; meaning High Stone Falls) and the Bodalen Waterfalls (Bødalen) were my waterfalling excuses to talk about a little detour that Julie and I took up the narrow Bødal Valley, which was a side valley of Lodal Valley.

Høysteinfossen and Huldrefossen just upstream of it were the only officially named waterfalls that we encountered, which were right on the river Bødalselva as they tumbled in multiple disjointed drops.

There were also a few other tall waterfalls tumbling down the Bødal Valley, which was why I added the title “Bødalen Waterfalls” to encompass them as well.

I believe the real reason why there was this very narrow unpaved access (that was barely wide enough to fit our rental car) as well as a car park and trail at the road’s end was that the walking track ultimately went by a mountain hut called Bødalssætra en route to the glacier Bødalsbreen higher up the mountain.

Like most of the other glacier arms we saw in this part of the country, this glacier also belonged to the vast Jostedalsbreen Glacier.

Julie and I didn’t do any hiking on this detour as all the waterfalls were pretty much right besides the narrow road.

By the way, the narrowness and steepness of this road was definitely a little on the scary side.

This waterfall could be Huldrefossen, which was just upstream of Høysteinfossen

I recalled that on our way down, we had to squeeze by someone who was coming up.

We were very lucky that there was a very tiny space that we coordinated our passing to occur at.

Otherwise, I’m not sure how we could have gotten past each other without someone having to back up on this single-lane road had it been anywhere else in Bødalen.

Authorities

To access Bødalen from Loen, drive towards Ramnefjellfossen, but instead of continuing straight ahead on the local road 723 at about 12.5km from town, turn left to go up the signposted and narrow unpaved road into Bødalen. Once we went up the road, we started to see Høysteinfossen at a hairpin turn about 3km up the single-lane road. There was a signpost with the number “5” on it next to the falls though I wasn’t sure what that “5” was keyed towards.

As we drove further up the twisty single-lane road from Høysteinfossen, we then encountered Huldrefossen (which appeared wider and shorter) another 750m later. The end of the road was just a few meters beyond this waterfall. That was where we noticed a few more streaking and thin waterfalls coming down the valley around the car park area.

For context, Stryn was 11km west of Loen, 75km (90 minutes drive) south of Geiranger, 295km (5 hours drive) north of Bergen, and 474km (over 6 hours drive) northwest of Oslo.
