About Sandsfossen
Sandsfossen was kind of a throw-in waterfall near the Sandsfjord-fringing town of Sand.
We only became aware of this waterfall when we saw a sign indicating its presence while we were trying to figure out how to reach the Ryfylke Fjordhotel where we were staying.
Although this wide river-type waterfall on the river Suldalslågen (I think is pronounced “SOOL-dolls-loh-gun”) was said to be a modest 4.4m tall and it appeared more like rapids than a waterfall, its claim to fame was really a salmon studio (Laksestudio).
That was where it was possible for visitors to peer through a window for an underwater perspective to see the fish make their way past the falls on a salmon ladder.
At the time, we weren’t aware of the studio so we only experienced the falls from the view you see at the top of this page.
Speaking of salmon, the Fosshølen pool at the base of the falls was said to provide good angling in September.
Perhaps on a return trip here, we might give this place another visit, and finally experience that salmon studio to see the fish doing their thing up close.
In any case, the view of the falls that you see on this page was from a grassy area behind a fence only a few paces from a small car park.

While driving west on the Rv46 towards the town of Sand, Julie and I spotted a sign to our left just past the bridge (Tjelmane bru) over the Suldalslågen River. We then took the local (seemingly residential) road (called Postvegen) and ultimately found the falls on this road. Conversely, we were also able to head east on Postvegen from the Ryfylke Hotel by making a pair of right turns to get onto the aforementioned local road.
Sand was our stopping point after having driving on the Ryfylkevegen (Rv13) for 102km from the turnoff for Preikestolen (on the other side of the Lysefjord from Stavanger) to the junction of Rv13 and Rv46. The ferry across the Sandsfjord in Sand was 2.5km west of this junction, and the turnoff onto the east side of Postvegen was about 1.4km west of this junction.
